kishimoto loves circles and baiting
only thing is that normally there isnt to much depth
pain had alot of hype but that finished rather anticlamaticly

And why do you think Itachi would have been trolled by Danzo? First there is still the big possibility that Danzo=Madara and thus definitely a fact to be concerned about even if you are Itachi and can perfectly see through.

And second, Itachi needed to get out of Konoha either way - for village and clan were killing him, and he could not just go and leave Sasuke to the both evils, could he? What I am trying to imply is that especially a perfectly knowing Itachi would have used the opportunity and do what was done no matter who or how well-equipped Danzo was. Because all that "sacrificed himself for the village" crap is just... crap Itachi has never openly admitted to.
